Please give us a short summary of your website?
A family's review of visiting Martha's Vineyard. We offer unique tips about vacationing on the Vineyard.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I'm a web developer and also have an interest in business on the web.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
My first site was in 1997 and was a dance store website for my in-laws.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
The site is all about Martha's Vineyard and I wanted to include certain keywords for search engine rankings.
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
It describes Martha's Vineyard from a family's personal experiences. We provide unique tips and thoughts that are not provided on larger, more corporate sites.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
To provide quality information and build a steady income stream.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I'm in the early stages so I'm spending more time relative to income received at this point. I know it takes time to build a reputation and traffic and income.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I might pay folks to do some tedious tasks like resizing images or customizing images. But, I'd still want to be the one creating content because it is our personal story about our trips on the Vineyard.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes, I will not be selling products so I don't need to be concerned about being swamped by orders.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
There have not been any so far.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Time. I have a job and a long commute and a family. So, having time to work on the site is a challenge.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
A combination of building great content, optimizing the pages for search engines, and obtaining quality links.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It hasn't. I've been in web development for about 10 years so I knew what to expect.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
It's been running for about 4 months now and I plan to keep it running because it will provide useful information for folks.
How do you plan to market your site ?
A combination of search engine optimization, directory listings, links from quality sites and word-of-mouth.
