Please give us a short summary of your website?
Big Island travelers can discover one of best values in Kona lodging, a spacious 2BR vacation rental condo by private owner at the Kanaloa at Kona resort. The associated Big Island Blog provides updates on Kona travel and the vacation rental scene on the Big Island.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
To publicize our rental property.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
This was my first website, first launched in 2001.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
Just wanted something short and easy, so: Kona1.com
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
We think we've put together a really attractive site that conveys the look and feel of this unique vacation destination. The blog was intended to provide travelers with additional useful information, I haven't kept it up as often as I'd like but am increasing posting in 2009.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
Keep it, maybe expand the domain into a broader Big Island vacation rental site.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
It doesn't take much time or money to keep the site going at this point, and the traffic we receive through it is essential to our vacation rental business.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I've been wanting to get some good video onto the site.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
It started out as a template site hosted by Bigstep, which went out of business. I moved it over onto a Wordpress platform in 2008, and that's been great, I can do so much more with it now.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
We do a lot of PPC advertising, and I'm slowly but steadily working on better search engine optimization and we're starting to see the benefit of that.
Has this website led you to develop others?
With my experience in the vacation rental business I'm now putting together a teaching site for owners who want to start renting out their property but don't know where to begin. Email me through my kona1.com site if you are interested!
