Please give us a short summary of your website?
Skopelos Greece provides free and comprehensive tourism and travel information about the Greek island of Skopelos.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I am a professional web developer, so building websites for myself was a natural thing to do.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
I first launched a website in 2006 about another Greek island: Paxos. The website, visit-paxos.co.uk, provides thorough tourism and travel details about this small Ionian island.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
The name Skopelos Greece was a no brainer, really. I took the name of the island and the name of the country and added them together. I was lucky that the URL was available.
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
My website differs from other websites about Skopelos as it offers a much greater depth and breadth of information. It is all written impartially; I am not trying to sell anything.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I will keep the website for a time and hopefully generate some income from it. Maybe in time I will thinks about selling it (along with my other sites), but at the moment that is not my aim.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
It's too early to say, though hopefully the website will generate advertising revenue in the months and years ahead.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would like to add a wider selection of photographs and videos to the site, so if I had the money I would like to invest in procuring more and better media.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes. Bring it on!
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
I have built similar sites in the past, so nothing was really unexpected. Of course, building a site always takes longer than you plan for...
What has been your biggest challenge?
As with all new websites, getting yourself known is the greatest challenge. I guess that is the same for all types of businesses and websites.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Link exchanges work pretty well. Having a portfolio of other sites is useful as it provides a means of giving exposure to your new site.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
When I first created a site for myself, I did not know what to expect. Now I have done it several times, nothing really catches me out.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
This is a new site, although the concept of the site is similar to others in my portfolio, so I am not expecting it to disappoint me.
What do you have planned for the future?
There are several website concepts milling around in my mind, so watch this space.
