my hard drive failed and at that time (2 months ago) I didn't know I was supposed to back things up

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
I downloaded the free directory submitter and shortly after finally got a PR (only 2 but still working on it)
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
much harder than when I first started - it is really a much more complex task than just building a site. the site has to be advertised and that's the REALLY hard part
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
I built it in 2004, let it go and then re-built it in 2007; I'm keeping it forever
What would help you get your site where you want to be?
learning more about backlinks and PR. Some people's opinion is that of all sorts of things get you blacklisted and other people seem to think you will be fine! I wish there were clean cut answers for people like me who REALLY don't know what they are doing :)
